I really love this story, and respect the honesty of Mr. Washington. As a little girl, the first step of my socialization was that I knew honesty is a wonderful virtue and determined to be a honest person, just like Mr. Washington.
So I did a honest thing, at least I thought so.
My sister and I used to take a bath together when we were kids. That night we want to take a bubble bath, but we don't have the special essence. So we just put the entire soap in to the bath water. Of course, after we finish our happy bubble bath, my Mom found the bath water was not normal. And she came to ask us did we do some trick. By mother's strict question, my sister decide to answer "No! You see the bubble in bath water is because we take shower and wash our head incautiously. The bubbles float in to water."
But my little conscience slightly functioned, and I decided to tell my Mom the truth. I thought it was a right thing to do, since Mr. Washington did so...
The second step of my socialization was that "you better observe adult's facial expression before you tell them anything, whether it's the truth or lie." and the third, "Do not trust the story of great person, we are from different family."
I take it that this story did not have the happy ending you were hoping for!
